Progress Update....#2

CHICANOMATION INK 2009 ©

Part 2....Here is scene 2, the swine in the forest same idea but with a bit of a 3d look done in watercolor as was the bamboo scene. My choice of mixing mediums and sticking to my "diverse" style is looking good and will continue on to the next scene. My goals still remain the same and other characters are going to be added for effect and style by mid-terms.
**New Update on Thurs. 4-30-09

Progress thus far.......4-28-09

CHICANOMATION INK 2009 ©

My progress thus far is going good, seeing that midterms are next week I will be in crunch mode. (I work always better under pressure it is one of my strengths) I did the first scene the bamboo area (see picture 2), As you will see in the picture it is the original concept all color was done in flash. The second concept is the same background (Flash) but in the front of it all I did using watercolor and ink (see first picture). I wanted to give it a more of a 3d environment feel. I feel that it worked and will proceed to doing another for the other scenes. Today I will begin the gator animation (see picture 3)the character is Ga-tor lou, I will color him in photoshop and animate him in flash to show movement in his robs, breathing, etc.
**Another update to be on Thurs. 4-30-09

Legend of the Drunken Swine-Chicanomation Ink 2009 ©

4-21-09
We are moving forward on the concepts and designs for "Legend of the Drunken Swine" created by David "Mexican Incredible" Marquez. It is the story of Pork Chow Mein, a Kung Fu student who has learned from the great Master Coon Wii, but there is always more to learn. In the time of turmoil in a small village the evil emperor Gae-tur Lo, has taken over the villages riches and food supply. Allowing the Shoulin Hippos to destroy and bully the towns people, stealing their riches and there gold flask which holds the secret to drunken boxing. Pork Chow Mein has had enough fighting his way through areas and battling the hippos and skunks to get the villages flask back. It will be a tough battle for he is still training to master the style of drunken boxing and with out the flask the secret to the style will be lost.
This is just a little writing sample of the idea for the idea, it is not set in stone. But with the design of characters and feel of the animals I will concepting it will be fun to see what I am planning on producing.
This will all be traditional hand drawn and some of the animation will be done in flash. I have already started from and earlier project and will be using those pieces as well as adding and revising to what I already have.
All art work will be posted and updated on a weekly basis. **All concepts and Ideas Copyrights of David Marquez and Chicanomation Ink 2009 © The events depicted in this movie, idea and concept or game are fictitious. Any similarity to any person living or dead is merely coincidental.

Final: Post Mortem for Project 2

Project 2 after the smoked has cleared......

Project Idea:

Penny arcade style shooting game fun and artistic.

Project Modifications:

I went in another direction wanting to focus on something else other than the art track I wanted to develop a game with a mechanic.

Project Goals:

The goals I had for this project were to develop a level that would allow the player to pick a weapon, shoot a target (whiskey bottle) and reload. As well as developing a nice style artistic layout; a blend of two worlds.

Project Name:

Bandidos (Correct Spelling)

Project Pros:

The concept for the project was on point; I was developing everything as I wanted. Though I went in a different direction about half way through the project I was still working on task, the concepts were coming quick and the action script code (AS3) was difficult to learn in such a short period of time but with the help of Justin I was going forward. I was also to develop a menu with a bit of a “reason” to play the first part of the game as well as picking the weapon of your choice.
The overall layout and idea was within the time frame, allowing me to continue creating fun style look for a game as well as elaborate on the idea. 9if I were to rate my success on a scale of 1 to 10, I would have to give myself a strong 8. Though the programming was a little rough it was still a fun project to work on.

Project Cons:

The game as a whole went well, but the only thing that went wrong for me was the programming. I could have done it in action script 2, instead I wanted to challenge myself with a little help to do it in action script 3. That was then that my weakness in programming was shown, thought the project is done and turned in I will continue to work on the game play as well as trying to learn more of action script 3.

Project Overall:

The project overall was a success I will be working on it much further for portfolio purposes, though I am not passionate about game design. The whole design concept is what I enjoy and the style I focus on is diversity in creation. This is something I can develop into a larger game and or a cartoon movie. Once again I thank you for the opportunity to work freely and develop work that is open for improvement.

Project 2 Update and Revisions Part 2

**Pictures Continued

Project 2 Update and Revisions Part 1

Status at this point in time:
The project is needing a few more art assets, I have enclosed screen shots of my over all progress at this time. I also decided to change direction, at first I decided to do a shooter game, I first wanted to a penny arcade shooter but my theme and title of the game "Bandidos" I decided to do a shooter with simple animations that would be interesting as well as demonstrate my artistic talent and animation knowledge though limited but like the industry continuing to grow and learn.
**The pictures will show from open credits to first weapon choice.

Project 2: Going for it all.....

For Project 2 I am going for broke. I choose the Art again but this time I am going to develop a little more. Above is a style of arcade, a "Penny Arcade" to your left (Facing the monitor) you will see a shooting game. With this project I will be incorporating my art style with this type of game. Implementing my unique art style I will be developing an intro and one working level, I will be getting some programming help form other classmates and outside sources. Talking with my fellow classmates the programming should be a smooth process. In doing so I will have to work quickly and proficient in my work.

It will be a fun project to work on and this time I am shooting for the stars on this one. It will be a western them with voice overs (Arnold) done by me. It will be fun with some cool unique animations. Updates twice a week and concepts will be done and scanned for Tues. class.

Project 1: Completed, but to be continued....

Project 1 Post Mortem:

Chicanomation Ink 2009 ©
Project 1:
Art for game/movie idea
“Legend of the Drunken Swine”
Goal:
To develop levels from concept to finished look for a possible game/cartoon movie; develop scenes with animation and develop characters to animate now as well as future for the project.
The Good:
The idea I had come up was solid, developing this idea was strong and would help me improve on my skills in flash. Also allowing me to learn and grow in my character developments. The purpose of this project was design a game/movie and show off the skills in art, from concepts to a finished product. Also I wanted to show off a bit of animation in flash, though it was a little I still felt I had to show some to get the full feel of what I was trying to achieve.
The Bad:
From day one I was positive on what I wanted to achieve, but I knew that time was a factor. With a project like this one I was doing it alone and all the art work was in my hands. From past experiences I had to push myself to the ultimate limit and exceed my own expectations. I do wish I had more time for this project just for the fact of wanting to add more elements as well as character animations and more areas of design. Also I had a bit of programming issues as well, with the help of a fellow student (Justin) we were able to develop a slide show with animation and sound.
The Final Outcome:
The final outcome was a success; I added most of the elements I needed to develop a finished project. If I had more time I would add more, also I would add actual game play for a single “demo” level. I plan on continuing this for future development. More level concepts and trying to refine the story and objective for the game.
This was another great learning experience, and I am planning to continue work on it no matter what it takes, developing this game is on my high priority list. Though I have other projects to attend to I will need to develop this more and put out a good portfolio piece and a finished project.

Project 1: Legend of the Drunken Swine - Images Part 2

Project 1: Legend of the Drunken Swine - Images Part:1

Besides having a few personal issues just in the last 5 days I have been progressing as quickly as I humanly can. The areas that I wanted to color have been colored and character concepts are always being drawn. The colored shots for the different areas (Shown Above) where all drawn first (Drawings posted in an earlier blog) and then transfer ed to flash and done in color. The character animations are being done as we speak and will have another dropped in for the final.

Update: Legend of the Drunken Swine

Today I continued doing the color concepts in Flash, with animations. Though these animations at this time are small (Candle Flicker) they are still key to the scene. No I will do one more area and then proceed onto the character animation (drunken swine)stumble for the main character Pork Chow Mien.

Above are colored shot of the forest area and the inner temple.

Project 1: Legend of the Drunken Swine

Update 1-20-09:
After the weekend I did some revising to the scenes. For one the wooded area with the mountain in the distance, I wanted to make it feel a bit of like fall, in doing that I had Incorporated some falling leaves to run continuously so that it would feel like the player was battling or traveling for along period of time but in a quick sense, Example in a fight sequence it would transition form fall to winter in a matter of attacks.

Several concept sketches for additional areas were also sketched over the weekend (posted above). Also character(s) both playable and non-playable were also developed further, a Shoulin Hippo and Pork Chow Mien drinking to be Incorporated in the final outcome.

Project 1: Legend of the Drunken Swine

My vision for this project is simple, develop art for three combining levels for the game, as well as drop in an animation of the main character. He is based on movement developed from the Chinese Martial Art Style Drunken Fist or Drunken Boxing.

The art style is a choice of bright yet soft colors depending on the "mood" of the game, since it is a fighting game I want to blend the styles as seen in movies like Hellboy 2, House of Flying Dagers, and Hero. It is very vibrante yet soft and flowing with the energy of martial arts.

References: Hellboy 2, House of Flying Daggers, Hero, Legend of the Drunken Master
Drunken Fist style of Self Defense and Martial Arts culture as related to China.
